01.09.-07.09. 2019 Innovative Approaches to the Numerical Approximation of PDEs Oberwolfach (DE) Partial differential equations form the basis for the mathematical modelling of a wide range of phenomena in science, engineering and economics. Therefore, the construction and the analysis of efficient discretization schemes for PDEs is one of the most important topics in modern numerical analysis. A lot of fundamental results that give rise to extremely efficient numerical algorithms have already been achieved, e.g., in the realm of the finite element method. However, in recent years, radically new challenges have emerged that require the development of innovative approaches far beyond conventional ones. As typical examples, let us mention high-dimensional problems, parameter dependent equations, and nonlocal problems such as fractional PDEs, just to name a few. It is the aim of this workshop to discuss and to compare the different novel approaches that have been established within the last few years, to study their potentials and to formulate strategic goals for the next years.

12.11. - 17.11. 2012 ESI 12, Wavelet methods in scientific computing Erwin Schrödinger Institut in Vienna Wavelets are by now a well-established tool in scientifc computing, in particular for the numerical treatment of operator equations. Compared to other methods, wavelets provide the following advantages. The strong analytical properties of wavelets, in particular their ability to characterize function spaces such as Sobolev or Besov spaces, can be used to design adaptive numerical schemes that are guaranteed to converge for a huge class of problems including operators of negative order. Moreover, the vanishing moments of wavelets give rise to compression strategies for densely populated matrices. Quite recently, it has also turned out that variants of the classical wavelet algorithms (tensor wavelets, orthogonal multiwavelets) have som potential to treat high-dimensional problems. Furthermore, the treatment of inverse problems by (adaptive) wavelet algorithms is currently one of the hot topics. Therefore, the aim of this workshop is to discuss the state of the art and the further perspectives of wavelet methods in scientific computing.
17.09. - 22.09. 2012 ESI 12, Applied Coorbit Theory Erwin Schrödinger Institut in Vienna Coorbit theory is by now a well-established tool in applied harmonic analysis. Based on group representations, this theory provides a unified approach that collects many different transforms such as the wavelet- and the Gabor-transform under one roof. Furthermore, the coorbit approach provides canonical smoothness spaces, the coorbit spaces. It is one of the aims of this workshop to strive for a complete classification of all possible coorbit spaces. Moreover, the coorbit theory provides atomic decompositions for the coorbit spaces by means of stable (Banach) frame decompositions. In many cases, the coorbit spaces coincide with classical smoothness spaces such as Besov and modulation spaces. For these spaces, many different atomic and molecular decompositions exist. Therefore, an additional aim of this workshop is to clarify the relations of these different decomposition techniques as far as possible.

22.08. - 26.08.2011 Macha 11 Marburg Application oriented Harmonic Analysis is a flourishing field of analysis, connecting hard analysis with questions of signal processing, physics, image analysis and other applied areas. It has become more and more important and an eminent source of inspiration (and experimentation) to study various natural (and often new) mathematical questions by setting up a corresponding MATLAB simulation. Although doing some simple numerical experiments is easy to do once a basic knowledge of programming has been achieved, a reliable and systematic work requires a sound basis for such experiments to be meaningful. The NuHAG team has been using MATLAB by now for more than 20 years, and has established a rich collection of MATLAB tools, already organized in an open way (accessible via the NuHAG MATLAB modules). The Marburg team has been developing wavelet software in MATLAB and C++ for more than 5 years now. Parts of the library are currently being worked into a publicly available MATLAB package. Learning how to make use of these existing tools is the main goal of the workshop, which however should at the end encourage the participants to make their own explorative investigations (leading to an enrichment of the collection of available code).
