Fundamentals and importance of bioinformatics for obtaining, managing and analyzing genomic and molecular biology data, molecular biology fundamentals, pairwise and multiple alignment of sequences using dynamic programming, heuristic methods of sequence comparison, methods of phylogenetic analysis, hidden Markov models and their applications, analysis of gene expression data, structure-based bioinformatics, introduction to systems biology.


Qualification Goals

Students will

  • Recognize the importance of bioinformatics to modern life sciences,
  • become familiar with the special properties of molecular biological data,
  • become familiar with important problem classes such as sequence analysis, structural analysis, expression analysis and phylogenetic analysis,
  • learn the main algorithmic and methodological principles of bioinformatics, especially sequence analysis,
  • apply informatics methods independently to molecular biology problems.
  • Interdisciplinary skills will be acquired. Students practice scientific working methods (recognizing, formulating, solving problems, training the ability to abstract) and train oral communication skills in the exercises by practicing free speech in front of an audience and during discussions.

Keine. Empfohlen werden Grundkenntnisse in Algorithmen und Datenstrukturen. Die wichtigsten molekularbiologischen Grundlagen werden rekapituliert, entsprechende Vorkenntnisse daher nicht vorausgesetzt. Grundkenntnisse in Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung, Knowledge Discovery, und Datenbionik sind hilfreich, aber nicht notwendig.
