Contents

In the exercise.

Ultrastructure of fungi; phylogenesis of fungi, mycorrhiza, plant and human pathogenic fungi; differentiation processes in fungi; cell biological and molecular genetic methods; fungi in biotechnology and strain optimization methods; yeast as a model system; crossing systems in ascomycetes and basidiomycetes.

In the course

The course takes place as a two-week practical course at the end of the summer semester break (September). During a field trip to a cornfield, students will be able to identify and collect Ustilago maydis tumors in the natural environment. The fungal material will then be isolated in the laboratory. Based on a current problem, the focus will be on the handling of the model organism Ustilago maydis: including the cultivation and storage of these microorganisms, microscopy, determination of the mating type, synthesis and analysis of secondary metabolites.

Qualification Goals

The module is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of mycology and to show what interesting questions can be addressed with the various fungi. In the practical part, students learn how to handle these organisms and gain important preliminary knowledge that will facilitate their entry into the bachelor's thesis, especially in genetics and mycology at the Department of Biology.

Prerequisites
