Contents

Point Mechanics: Kinematics and dynamics of mass points in one and three spatial dimensions, Newton's laws, conservation laws, bound and unbound motions in potentials, integration of equations of motion for symmetric potentials, description of scattering processes, Hamilton's principle, Lagrange's equations of the first and second kind, rigid bodies, Hamiltonian mechanics.

Computational techniques: Vector analysis, series expansions, differential equations, systems of linear equations.


Qualification Goals

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to name basic definitions and methods from the field of analytical mechanics and explain working methods of the field. They are able to describe the problems mathematically. The students are able to classify theoretical approaches and model building. They possess the ability to evaluate given problems from analytical mechanics and to recognize ways to solve them and to successfully follow the solution path in simple cases by applying the methods they have learned in the module.
