Contents

This module includes a discussion of various forms of institutions (markets, laws, social norms, political institutions, etc.). An understanding of the development of different institutions and their effect on the behavior of individuals is provided. An overview of the major theoretical approaches in institutional economics will be provided.


Qualification Goals

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to,

(1) explain the role of institutions as solutions to societal problems of cooperation and coordination,

(2) identify explanations for cultural differences in the institutional structure,

(3) apply various institutional economics approaches to simple problems and evaluate alternative institutional solutions to problems using formal methods.
