Contents

Molecular methods: from RNA to expression patterns:

Presentation of methods, possible applications, limitations of their use.

Molecular Methods for Zoologists:

Basic molecular methods suitable for addressing evolutionary, developmental, cellular biology, or physiological questions in animals. Isolation and analysis of nucleic acids, cDNA synthesis, PCR for isolation of single genes, cloning, transformation, restriction analysis; immunocyto- and -histochemistry, PAGE, protein expression. Integrated into the course in terms of time and topic is the lecture introducing the methods.

Qualification Goals

Students will learn basic molecular and cell biology methods of modern zoology. The aim is to acquire the necessary practical and theoretical knowledge for experimental analyses of nucleic acids, proteins and expression patterns on single cells or whole animals. The methods learned are suitable for addressing and evaluating evolutionary, molecular morphological, developmental and physiological questions. The module is suitable for research and practice-related occupational fields in the field of molecular zoology, and, depending on the orientation, qualifies students for corresponding work at research institutes, in industry or museums. Cross-connections exist with developmental biology and genetics, physiology as well as cell biology.
