In exercise 1

Teaching of general and methodological principles in forensics; possibilities and limits of forensics; examples from case work; work as an expert witness in court

In exercise 2 with excursion

Teaching of relevant methods of forensics in the fields of molecular biology (isolation of genomic DNA from saliva samples, microsatellite PCR with genomic DNA, genotyping using allelic ladders), population genetics (calculation of identity probabilities and exclusion percentages) and α-taxonomy (identification of organisms relevant in forensics as well as their ontogenetic stages, if applicable); visit to the Federal Criminal Police Office or workshop with BKA staff.


Qualification Goals

Students will be introduced to the basics of forensic biology. The theory is to be consolidated in the process. Students will be familiarized with the specific methods used in forensic science. Special emphasis will be placed on the transferability and application of molecular and taxonomic methods to solve forensic problems.
