Exercise 1
On a three-day as well as a one-day field exercise, plant identification is practiced using rare and unusual plants in their natural habitat. Site ecology and conservation aspects will be included in the consideration of habitats.
Exercise 2
In two one-day field exercises, rarely addressed ornamental plants as well as native woody plants are identified based on seasonally limited characteristics. The ability to integrate a few morphological clues into a taxonomic delimitation is practiced.
Qualification Goals
The module expands botanical form knowledge well beyond standard knowledge. In summer, botanically valuable habitats are studied and the eye for conservation aspects is sharpened. In winter, the otherwise stepmotherly treated gymnosperms and evergreen angiosperms are the focus. The use of fruits, buds, and bark as identification aids is emphasized and taxonomic narrowing of plants based on highly limited identification characteristics is trained. Students in cellular/microbiology majors will use this module to distinguish themselves through botanical form knowledge and fundamentals in applied botany.
