Contents

Development, biology of the cell and its parasites:

Genomics, formation of vesicles and fusion of membranes (viruses, mitochondria, fertilization, myogenesis), regulation and special functions of compartments, gastrulation and organization centers, stem cells and biomedical indication, gene¬regulation (promoters, enhancers, example from development in combination with signaling chains, insulators), cellular memory (Polycomb et al.a.), imprinting, and mammalian cloning, basic mechanisms of pathogenicity of infectious agents, immunity to parasites and mechanisms of immune evasion.

Methods - development, biology of the cell and its parasites:

Independent performance of experiments on the topics: Organelle isolation, genomics and introduction to bioinformatics, analysis of compartment-specific gene expression steps in nucleus, protein expression in E. coli, purification with His-tags, 2D gel electrophoresis, affinity chromatography, basics of serological diagnostics, analysis of transposon induced mutants with developmental defects. Ectopic expression of genes and its consequence for development (UAS-GAL4 system).

A protocol of the experiments to be performed is to be prepared.

Qualification Goals

Students are to learn in-depth knowledge of developmental biology as well as cell biology, taking into account the relevance to parasites and other infectious agents, while acquiring an understanding of biological relationships and theories. The aim is also to expand the methodological knowledge in this field. In addition to the theoretical basics, independent practical skills in the design and execution of experiments are taught, as well as the detailed presentation of an experimental protocol and the critical evaluation of data.

Prerequisites
