Contents

Introduction to genetics and microbiology:

The cell cycle; meiosis and sexual development cycles; Mendel and the concept of genes; the chromosomal basis of inheritance; the molecular basis of inheritance; from gene to protein; organization and control of eukaryotic genomes; genetic engineering and genomics. The chemical framework of life; water and the environmental fitness for life; carbon and the molecular diversity of life; the structure and function of biological macromolecules; introduction to metabolism; prokaryote and eukaryote cells differ in size and complexity; membranes: structure and function; cellular respiration: obtaining chemical energy. Microbes as model systems: The genetics of viruses and bacteria; the young earth and the origin of life; prokaryotes and the origin of metabolic diversity.

Genetic/Microbiology Course:

Conduct under supervision: light and phase contrast microscopy; characterization of microorganisms; cultivation of microorganisms; antimicrobial agents; regulation of metabolism. Performance of experiments on the topics: Classical genetics, mapping of genes, sex-linked inheritance, preparation of human DNA and PCR, transformation and characterization of a plasmid, preparation of a protocol on the experiments performed.

Qualification Goals

Teaching basic biological knowledge with emphasis on the following:

The chemistry of life and introduction to metabolism; prokaryote and eukaryote cells differ; microbes as model systems; introduction to the history of life; prokaryotes and the origin of metabolic diversity. Knowledge of the basic rules of heredity and underlying molecular mechanisms.

The module provides basic biological knowledge and is independent of the student's subsequent interests and career direction.
