M.Sc. Mathematics — Profile Area Physics

In the M.Sc. Mathematics program, a total of 18 CP must be completed in the physics profile area. The available combinations depend firstly on whether the profile area is to be completed in Theoretical Physics or in Experimental Physics and secondly on whether physics modules have already been completed in the Bachelor's program:

1) Study of the profile area physics in theoretical physics

a) without previous knowledge in physics

The profile area consists of the compulsory module "Analytical Mechanics" (9 CP) and one of the two compulsory elective modules "Classical Field Theory" (9 CP) or "Quantum Mechanics 1" (9 CP).

b) with prior knowledge of physics: if two modules as under a) have already been completed in the Bachelor, the profile area consists of the two compulsory modules "Quantum Mechanics 2" (6 CP) and "Statistical Physics 1" (6 CP) and one further module (6 CP) from the modules "Biological and Statistical Physics" (A, B, or C) or the modules "Advanced Theoretical Physics" (A, B, or C).

c) with little previous knowledge of physics

If only the module ''Analytical Mechanics'' (9 CP) was completed in the Bachelor, the modules "Classical Field Theory" (9 CP) and "Quantum Mechanics 1" (9 CP) have to be taken.

2) Study of the profile area physics in experimental physics

a) without previous knowledge in physics

The profile area consists of the two compulsory modules "Mechanics" and "Electricity and Thermodynamics" from the course of studies for the teaching profession in physics.

b) with prior knowledge of physics: if the two modules under a) have already been completed in the Bachelor's degree, the profile area consists of the compulsory module "Optics and Quantum Phenomena" and one of the two compulsory elective modules "Physics of Atoms and Molecules" or "Solid State Physics 1".

c) with little previous knowledge of physics

If only one of the modules under a) was completed in the Bachelor's degree, the other one as well as the compulsory module ''Optics and Quantum Phenomena'' must be taken.
