Current topics in insect systematics, biology, and ecology will be presented and discussed in lecture format.
In the exercise
The identification of important native insects will be practiced using specimens. In addition, the preparation of insects and the establishment of a scientific collection will be learned. As part of the exercise, there will be a one-day excursion to the Senckenberg Naturmuseum in Frankfurt.
Qualification Goals
Insects are the most species-rich taxonomic group of animals. Without an understanding of insect biodiversity, no fundamental understanding of biodiversity is possible. This module will highlight the importance of insects to ecological and conservation issues. In addition, students will gain in-depth knowledge of the systematics of the native insect fauna by learning preparation techniques and how to identify insects.
